Auxetic materials have a negative Poisson’s coefficient. This causes these materials, when pulled (traction), to expand their cross-section. In non-auxetic behavior, this section decreases.
This amazing behavior increase the impact resistance of these materials, for they improve a fast energy dissipation throughout their structure.
Applications go from protection (including ballistics), civil construction or even structures applied to space, among many other needs where impact protection is required.
